Rodney was skeptical about trees because they were looking for a cocooned Wraith. Even drop-bears don't actually hibernate up in the trees. And a Wraith, which might be in a cocoon for many years, has to think really long-term when looking for the right place. So a tree that might blow over in the wind or get caught in a fire isn't quite so likely for that purpose.
